In April 2025, the highly anticipated 25 Aldebaran DC, equipped with a DC brake, made its debut from the Aldebaran lineup.

Within the Aldebaran series, this is the first release since the BFS model in 2022, and as a versatile Aldebaran model, it marks the first appearance in about 7 years since the 2018 release.
While Aldebaran generally has a strong reputation for its bait finesse models, this marks the first time a DC brake has been adopted in the Aldebaran series, resulting in an exceptionally well-finished reel.
In this article, we will introduce the features and appeal of the 25 Aldebaran DC.
25 Aldebaran DC Basic Specs
The gear ratio comes in two variations. The maximum line retrieve per handle crank for the XG model is 84cm—not an eye-catching number, but it boasts more than enough retrieval amount for practical use.
The weight is 150g, which is about 20g heavier compared to the 18 Aldebaran MGL (135g) and the 22 Aldebaran BFS (130g). This increase is likely due to the inclusion of the DC unit. However, the reel itself is compact, and we believe it will provide excellent overall balance when mounted on a rod.

While previous Aldebaran models only featured centrifugal or magnetic brakes, the adoption of the DC brake for the first time realizes highly precise cast control and versatile adaptability.
Furthermore, the 25 Aldebaran DC utilizes a 30mm diameter spool. A configuration featuring both a DC brake and a 30mm spool is currently unique among Shimano's baitcasting reels.
Equipped with Small Diameter 30mm Magnum Light Spool IV

This 25 Aldebaran DC adopts Shimano's first 30mm diameter, 19mm width narrow spool. Achieving even lower inertia than the conventional 32mm diameter, the startup ease and response of lightweight lures have been dramatically improved.
Adopts the Magnum Light Spool IV, which features a reverse-tapered spool shape to create a well-balanced line winding profile. Winding the line evenly suppresses wobbling during rotation, bringing out the spool's rotational performance and contributing to excellent casting performance. The spool size is a small diameter & narrow specification of 30mm diameter / 19mm width. Exhibiting characteristics of low inertia and low vibration, it achieves a light startup. Not to mention pinpoint accuracy at close ranges, it also covers long casts for searching wide areas with high adaptability.
New I-DC5 Brake System
While the I-DC5 brake system itself has been featured in the 21 Scorpion DC and 22 SLX DC XT, the 25 Aldebaran DC is equipped with a newly tuned I-DC5.
- A highly precise digital control brake that controls braking force in 1/1000th of a second increments.
- Offers 3 modes: L (Low), M (Medium), and H (High), each with a 5-step brake dial, allowing for a total of 15 levels of adjustment. Enables intuitive brake settings regardless of line type.
- Excels in trouble-free casting, long-distance performance, low trajectory, and backlash resistance even with lightweight lures.

Adopts Many Other Technologies
- S3D Spool and Silent Tune suppress spool vibration, realizing a smooth casting feel.
- Packed with many of Shimano's flagship features, including Micro Module Gear, X-SHIP, and HAGANE Body.
- Equipped with an Exciting Drag Sound (Drag Clicker).
Summary
The 25 Aldebaran DC is a fusion model of a small diameter spool and a high-precision DC brake that brings together Shimano's technological prowess. It is particularly excellent in trouble-free performance tailored to the casting capabilities of lightweight lures, allowing you to handle various situations with just this one reel. Additionally, the DC brake, featured for the first time in an Aldebaran, allows for intuitive adjustments. With the adoption of SA-RB bearings, it is finished as a next-generation technical versatile reel that excels not only in bass fishing but also in saltwater light games.
Use Cases & Evaluation
- Extremely high casting performance for light to medium-weight lures, widely adaptable from pinpoint casting to long casts.
- While the "Aldebaran BFS" series is more suitable for ultra-lightweight lures typical of bait finesse reels, the Aldebaran DC shows its true value when using slightly heavier lures or lines of 8lb or more.
- The DC brake resolves the difficulty of brake adjustment and backlash with lightweight lures, realizing comfortable casting.
- Strong against saltwater, it is compatible with diverse fishing styles such as chinning (black sea bream game) and light rockfish.
