The Shimano 25 Complex XR is a dedicated spinning reel designed specifically for black bass fishing. It has been updated for the first time in four years, succeeding the previous 21 Complex XR model.
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the features, specifications, and differences from the previous model to help you understand the new 25 Complex XR.

What is the 25 Complex XR?
The 25 Complex XR is a spinning reel tailored for black bass fishing, positioned within Shimano's lightweight "MGL Series." It is based on the 24 Vanford, with specific customizations optimized for bass fishing.
Lightweight Design
The most notable feature of the 25 Complex XR is its overwhelming lightness. The C2500 size weighs only 155g, while the 2500 size weighs 165g. This lightweight construction significantly enhances sensitivity and operability, making it ideal for delicate bass fishing techniques.
MGL (Magnumlite) Rotor
Equipped with the MGL Rotor, the reel offers exceptionally light rotation startup. This allows for precise control when making subtle actions with finesse rigs.

Rigid Support Drag
The reel features the "Rigid Support Drag" system, which is a significant upgrade from the base 24 Vanford model. By supporting the spool with bearings on both the main shaft and the spool itself, it eliminates spool wobble and ensures smooth drag performance even under high tension.

Two-Way Drag System
The drag system is customized depending on the reel size: - C2500 Size: Features the "High Response Drag," designed to prevent line breakage when using light fluorocarbon lines (4lb or less). It responds instantly to sudden fish runs. - 2500 Size: Features the "Rapid Fire Drag," which allows for quick drag adjustments. This is particularly useful in power finesse situations using PE lines, where you need to instantly increase drag pressure to pull fish away from cover.

Comparison with the Previous Model (21 Complex XR)
Let's compare the new 25 Complex XR with its predecessor, the 21 Complex XR.

Design Changes
While maintaining the black-based body color, the spool now features silver accents, giving it a more striking and refined appearance.
New Features
The 25 Complex XR incorporates four major new technologies inherited from the 24 Vanford:
1. Infinity Cross (Improved Gear Durability)
Infinity Cross increases the contact area between the drive gear and pinion gear. This distributes the load more evenly, effectively doubling the gear's durability compared to previous models.

2. Infinity Drive (Smoother Winding)
Infinity Drive improves the sliding action of the main shaft. By supporting the main shaft with a special low-friction bushing and applying special surface treatments, it significantly reduces rotational resistance, allowing for powerful and smooth winding even under heavy loads.

3. Anti-Twist Fin (Reduced Line Trouble)
An elastic fin is installed just below the line roller. This reduces the gap between the line roller and the spool, preventing the line from falling off and significantly reducing line troubles. This is a highly welcomed feature for bass fishing, which involves repeated casting and retrieving of light rigs.

4. Duracross (Enhanced Drag Durability - 2500 Size Only)
The 2500 size models are equipped with "Duracross" drag washers. By weaving fibers orthogonally, the wear resistance is increased by more than 10 times compared to conventional felt washers, while maintaining the same smooth drag performance.

Minor Updates (Spool Size and Gear Ratio)
There are slight changes in spool diameters and gear ratios, which affect winding speed and torque: - F4 Models: The spool size has been increased (C2000 to C2500), slightly increasing the winding speed. - F6 Models: The winding torque has slightly increased.
| Model | Size/Gear | Gear Ratio | Spool Diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21 Complex XR | C2000 F4 | 5.1 | 43mm |
| C2000 F4 HG | 6.1 | 43mm | |
| 2500 F6 | 5.3 | 47mm | |
| 2500 F6 HG | 6.0 | 47mm | |
| 25 Complex XR | C2500 F4 | 5.1 | 44mm |
| C2500 F4 XG | 6.3 | 44mm | |
| 2500 F6 | 5.1 | 47mm | |
| 2500 F6 HG | 5.8 | 47mm |
Note: The 25 Complex XR does not feature the "Infinity Loop" (super slow oscillation) found in higher-end models. For bass fishing, where casting and lure manipulation are frequent, standard oscillation is often preferred to minimize line trouble.
Product Lineup and How to Choose
The 25 Complex XR comes in 4 models, featuring 2 body sizes and 2 rotor sizes.
C2500 vs 2500
- Choose the C2500 if you are using light fluorocarbon lines (4lb or less) and want to maximize the advantages of a lightweight setup.
- Choose the 2500 if you are using PE lines for power finesse fishing around cover.
Normal Gear vs High Gear (HG) / Extra High Gear (XG)
- Normal Gear is ideal for techniques that require maintaining a specific depth, such as mid-strolling or hover-strolling.
- HG or XG is recommended for fast-paced fishing where you need to quickly retrieve the lure and make repeated casts.
