Shimano's affordable SLX series has introduced a new bait finesse (BFS) model in 2025.
The SLX series was originally released overseas, and various models have been introduced domestically (Japanese market) as well, making it a popular high-cost-performance series with a proven track record.
This time, the SLX BFS has been upgraded after about 4 years, featuring an even cooler appearance.
In this article, we will introduce the features and appeal of the highly recommended high-cost-performance model, the 25 SLX BFS, perfect for those starting bait finesse or focusing on shore fishing.

25 SLX BFS Basic Specifications
The 25 SLX BFS is a bait finesse reel developed under the concept of "Freestyle BFS (Bait Finesse System) that freely manipulates lightweight lures." It is a popular model known for its high cost performance, suitable for a wide range of fields, from bass fishing to mountain streams and light saltwater games.

The lineup consists of only one model with a choice of right or left handle, showing a commitment to eliminating unnecessary costs.
The gear ratio is 8.2, and the retrieve length per handle turn is 82cm, making it an optimal setting for bait finesse where quick returns are essential.
A slightly disappointing point is that the weight is 170g, which is the same as the previous 21 SLX BFS model. Given the recent trend towards weight reduction, it would have been nice if the latest model was lighter than its predecessor.
However, it is more than sufficient for finesse use, and its specifications allow for winding fishing using light plugs, making it an optimal reel for shore fishing.
FTB (Finesse Tune Brake system)

To improve the pitching performance of lightweight lures used in bait finesse,
reducing spool weight is a major challenge.
Traditionally, spool weight was reduced by blanking out material—that is, drilling holes in the spool—but there was a limit to how much weight could be cut as long as the brake unit remained attached.
FTB solved this problem by removing the brake unit from the spool, making it possible to create a much lighter spool.
This led to an unprecedented brake system that applies magnetic braking directly to the spool.
With its unique mechanism combining centrifugal characteristics and magnetic braking, the system helps prevent backlash even with lightweight lures while also making long-distance casting more comfortable.
Extra Super Duralumin Spool

Equipped with a newly designed lightweight, low-inertia spool with a diameter of 32mm and a width of 22mm, it enables casting lightweight lures from the 3g range. In addition, the blanking of the spool has increased, reducing the weight of the spool itself even if the overall weight remains the same.
The rotational performance provided by this lightweight spool and FTB makes low-trajectory casting easier and improves the accuracy of approaches to pin spots.
Exciting Drag Sound
The SLX BFS is equipped with a drag sound mechanism that emits a click sound when the line is pulled out with drag system.
With spinning reels that use thin lines, you can visually grasp the drag situation by watching the spool rotate, but structurally, it is difficult to grasp the drag situation with baitcasting reels.
With the SLX BFS, the drag sound allows you to grasp the drag situation by sound, enabling you to engage in a fight with peace of mind.
