Shimano expanded the compact Stile offshore reel family for 2026 with the 100HG and left-hand 101HG. The new 7.8:1 option sits between the existing PG and XG models, offering 71 cm (28.0 in) of line recovery per handle turn without changing the series’ 145 g (5.1 oz) weight.

Why the HG Model Matters
Until the HG arrived, the current Stile family required anglers to choose between the torque-oriented PG and the speed-oriented XG. HG fills the middle with a 7.8:1 ratio and 71 cm (28.0 in) of recovery. It is intended for anglers who move among several boat techniques and do not want either extreme.
The distinction is mechanical rather than cosmetic. PG retrieves 58 cm (22.8 in) per turn and is rated for 4.5 kgf (9.9 lbf) of maximum drag. HG retrieves 71 cm (28.0 in), while XG retrieves 81 cm (31.9 in); both faster ratios are rated to 3.5 kgf (7.7 lbf). All versions share the same spool dimensions, line capacity, handle length, bearing count, and reel weight.

A 145 g Magnesium HAGANE Body
The Stile frame is magnesium, the same broad material category used in Shimano’s Stella flagship spinning reels. That does not mean the two reels share the same body design or manufacturing specification; it means magnesium is used here to combine low mass with a rigid metal frame. A rigid frame helps keep the drive gear and pinion aligned when winding load increases.
Every Stile model weighs 145 g (5.1 oz). Keeping the reel compact and light reduces the mass held in the hand during repeated drops, retrieves, and clutch operations, which is particularly relevant in technical boat fishing.

MicroModule Gear and Winding Resistance
Shimano uses smaller, more numerous gear teeth to create a denser mesh between the main gear and pinion. The purpose of MicroModule Gear is to reduce gear noise and support smooth power transmission without reducing the published strength of the gear system.
Shimano reports that handle load on the current XG is approximately 6% lower than on the 2016 Stile XG. The comparison is specific: the new reel combines a smaller spool diameter with a longer 55 mm (2.17 in) handle even though its gear ratio is higher. It should not be interpreted as a universal reduction across every reel or every fishing load.

55 mm Double Handle and Revised Clutch
The current Stile uses a 55 mm (2.17 in) double handle, up from the previous generation’s 51 mm (2.01 in) handle. The longer crank increases leverage and the two knobs help maintain balanced rotation. Shimano also reshaped the clutch lever so it can be reached with less thumb movement while the reel is held in a three-finger palming grip.
That combination is useful in fishing where the spool is repeatedly disengaged to follow depth changes. The design objective is quicker operation without forcing the angler to shift the reel deeply in the hand.
SVS Centrifugal Brake and Casting
Stile includes Shimano’s SVS centrifugal brake. Brake blocks apply centrifugal force as spool speed rises, helping control the early, high-speed part of a cast. On a compact offshore reel this expands the approach beyond straight vertical drops, allowing short horizontal casts when searching around a boat.

Drag System and Fine-Line Fishing
The Stile uses carbon drag washers and Shimano’s Exciting Drag Sound, which gives audible feedback when line is pulled from the spool. PG carries the higher maximum drag rating, while HG and XG prioritize retrieve speed. In practice, working drag should be set for the rod, leader, hook, and target—not simply at the reel’s maximum value.

Choosing PG, HG, or XG by Technique
PG: controlled winding and higher drag rating
PG is the logical starting point for steady presentations such as slow, consistent tai-rubber retrieves or situations where winding leverage takes priority over rapid recovery. It also carries the family’s highest published maximum drag rating.
HG: the broadest middle ground
HG suits anglers moving among maruika, filefish, pufferfish, whiting, vertical lure work, and other light-offshore methods. Its recovery is meaningfully faster than PG without reaching the XG extreme. That makes it a practical single-reel choice, although the ideal ratio still depends on depth, rig resistance, current, and retrieve style.
XG: fastest line pickup
XG is the choice for quickly recovering rigs, increasing the number of drops in a session, or responding to fish that swim upward and create slack. Its high ratio is also useful when shifting from vertical presentation to short casts, but anglers should consider the increased mechanical ratio when winding high-resistance rigs.
