The Antares uses NEW 4×8 DC MD Tune. Its internal dial provides fluorocarbon, braid, nylon, and XB modes; Shimano identifies XB for aerodynamic resistance and heavier lure applications. An eight-position external dial then fine-tunes braking within the selected internal mode.

Objectively, the Scorpion favors quicker external-only adjustment, while the Antares provides more explicitly separated line and lure modes. Casting distance and control still depend on the lure, line, wind, spool fill, and brake setting, so neither layout guarantees a universal performance advantage.
MGL Spool IV vs MGL Spool III
The Scorpion's MGL Spool IV uses a reverse-taper spool profile intended to improve the shape of the wound line and reduce imbalance-related vibration at high rotational speed. Shimano developed it from the thin-wall, low-inertia MGL Spool III concept while retaining the shared 38 mm × 21 mm format.

The Antares uses MGL Spool III, which focuses on thin-wall construction and low rotational inertia. Shimano pairs it with the NEW 4×8 DC MD Tune calibration. The two designs therefore reach the same capacity target through different spool generations and brake-control strategies.

Body, Drive System, and Bearings
Both reels use a HAGANE Body, MicroModule Gear, X-SHIP, Silent Tune, S3D Spool, S A-RB bearings, and Super Free Spool. Shimano also lists Silent Drive for the 2026 Scorpion. Its O-ring support at the pinion-gear and spool-shaft interface is intended to reduce play that can be felt through the handle.
The Scorpion uses an aluminum frame and weighs 225 g (7.9 oz). The Antares uses a magnesium frame and weighs 235 g (8.3 oz). Material alone does not determine total rigidity or feel because frame geometry, side-plate construction, gear support, and component mass also contribute.
